Creating Profitable Campaigns Using
The Power of KeywordSpy

Dear Reader,

It will bring you one step closer to success, but remember - even with the right keyword list, you still need ads that work and a landing page and offer that converts.. So there's a ton of power in keywords, but it's just one part of the puzzle to unlocking untold riches :)

"Let's Get Down To Business!"

If you know how to do keyword research, you can really improve your PPC campaign ROI 100%+

Each keyword has a positive or negative value. Your job is to discover the most profitable keywords and test them in your campaigns.

Once you know how to select and test keywords, you are on the path to keyword mastery.

I’ve tried all the keyword tools on the market. The best one I’ve found is KeywordSpy. The reason that KeywordSpy outperforms the other tools is because the keyword lists contain less “noise.”

What I mean by “noise” is keywords that are too broad or unrelated to your niche. These are evil. They will destroy your profits and take you down.

"This Is Your Mission.."

1) Find the most profitable keywords in your industry

2) Test them in your campaigns

3) Eliminate keywords with a negative ROI.

It’s pretty simple. The reason why KeywordSpy is so powerful is that it allows you to test a largest amount of lateral keywords.

"Understanding Keyword Length & Lateral v. Deep Keywords"

Lateral Keywords (or "Broad" keywords) – These are keywords that have little overlap but still are extremely relevant to your niche. For example, “dog training”, “dog barking”, and “dog problems” are all broad keywords if you are selling a dog training ebook.

When you first start your campaign, you want to have a massive set of lateral keywords.

The reason is because you are testing different types of keywords. Some of these lateral keywords may have very high ROI’s.

Deep Keywords – These keywords are all related to a very specific keyword. For example, “dog barking problems”, “dog barking help” & “dog barking solution” are deep keywords which all contain “dog barking”

Unfortunately, many newbies make the mistake of adding a ton of deep keywords to their campaigns before exploring the lateral keywords.

This is a huge mistake. You need to first add lateral keywords to explore the market opportunities. Once you’ve found a highly profitable segment of keywords, then.. and only then.. is it time to “go deep.”

So now you should know:

1) Avoid “noise” – Keywords that are unrelated to your niche

2) Go “lateral” before going “deep”

3) Your job is to test as many lateral keywords as possible.

Okay, let’s continue…

"Introduction To KeywordSpy"

Once you sign up for KeywordSpy, you have the option of doing a search for a keyword or the name of a website.

What I do is type in a very targeted keyword that directly applies to the niche I’m promoting. For example, if you are promoting a dog training ebook, you can type in “dog training ebook” – The companies who are advertising under this keyword are most likely 100% relevant to your niche as well.

Of course, if you get too specific with your initial keyword, you may have no results at all. That’s fine. Just try a broader keyword like “dog training solution”

What you are doing is finding the most highly relevant keyword lists to download first. This is key. You want to make sure you get rid of all “noise” by only downloading keyword lists that are 100% relevant to the product you are promoting.

What I like to do is go through page 1, 2, & 3 of a keyword list I’m about to download, and make sure 100% of the keywords apply exactly to the product I’m promoting. If the keywords are irrelevant or do not apply exactly to my niche, I don’t download the keyword list.

"Unlocking the 'Key' To KeywordSpy

Download only highly relevant keyword lists that match your niche/market 100% - If the keyword list contains any keywords that are not relevant, don't download it.

So the next step is to download as many highly relevant keyword lists as possible. Take some time during this phase, because it’s really important. Go ahead and perform quite a lot of searches and try to download only the most relevant and targeted keyword lists. MAKE SURE TO DOWNLOAD THE FILES AS A .CSV FILE.

It’s really not that hard at all. But it does take some time a little patience.

"Combining Keywords & Removing Duplicates"

Make sure to download all the files as a CSV file to the same location (folder) on your computer. We are going to combine all the keywords using a tool called TXTCollector. This is a free tool available at http://bluefive.pair.com/txtcollector.htm

Once you’ve downloaded about 15 to 25 of your competitor’s keywords, then open the TXTCollector program and choose the directory that you downloaded the files to:

Simply click "CSV" from the drop down list on the top right, then click “Combine All Files”

Save your files to a folder or to your Desktop.

You should now have a pretty good list with little noise of all the competitors in your industry combined into 1 file.

Open the saved .txt file in Excel and delete all the columns except for Column A.

Now You Must Eliminate Low Volume Keywords Using the Google Traffic Estimator

1) Go to the Google Traffic Estimator tool

2) Copy & Paste in your list of keywords from the .txt file you created in the previous step.

3) On the bottom, select "All Countries & Territories" and click "Add"

4) Leave all the other fields blank, and then click "Continue" at the bottom of the page. (If you get an error, it means you need to Find and Remove the non-ascii (non-standard) characters from your keyword list and then repaste the keywords back into the tool)

5) On the next page, click "Download as .CSV" to your Desktop

6) Open up the .CSV file in Excel, then sort by Column C (Search Volume) from Highest to Lowest.

7) Remove all keywords with a Search Volume of "0".

OK. Let me explain. When you first downloaded your competitors keywords from KeywordSpy and combined them into 1 file, you probably had around 2,000 to 50,000 keywords. This is a HUGE list of keywords, and Google and other PPC search engines now frown upon such a big list of keywords, because they feel there is little relevancy .

The reason why you are using the Google Traffic Estimator tool is to remove keywords that do not get searched for very often. Remember the 80/20 rule? Well, 20% of your keywords will account for 80% of your profits. We do not want to spend our time uploading a ridiculous amount of keywords into our campaign that will never get searched for.

Since you now have a decent sized list (500 to 2000) of keywords that get searched for on a frequent basis, Google will reward you for being RELEVANT.

Now, here’s where things get interesting. What we will be doing is formatting this Excel file in a particular order so that we can import our campaign into Adwords Editor.

"Formatting Excel Into Keywords, Ad Groups & Ads To Easily Import Into Adwords Editor"

Step 1. DOWNLOAD THE EXCEL SPREADSHEET HERE which you will use to create your Adwords campaign. (Later I'll show you how to copy the Excel spreadsheet into Adwords Editor).

Step 2. Watch The Video Below

Open up Excel. Hit CTRL+V to paste the keywords into Excel into cell B1. In cell C1, use the formula =LEN(B1). This formula will show you the length of whatever is in cell B1. We want to move all keywords that are greater than 25 characters into a new Excel sheet which we will upload to our account at a later time.

Now double click on the bottom right of the C1 cell. You are going to “fill down” the formula so that you will now see the length of all keywords.

Select column B & C with your mouse. Then go to Data-> Sort. Sort by Column C in Descending order. This will move all the keywords that are really long to the top of your Excel file.

The reason we are sorting the keywords by length is because the headline of an Adwords ad is only 25 characters. We will be using the actual keyword as the headline of every Adwords ad. I will explain this later.

Now you should have a list of keywords which are sorted by length. Select all the keywords with your mouse that are greater than 25 characters and cut and paste them to a new sheet.

Once you moved the keywords with a length greater than 25 characters to a new sheet, you should only be left with a set of highly targeted keywords that are 25 characters or less.

Remember, you don’t want to delete the keywords which are greater than 25 characters, because we will use them as long tail keywords after our initial set of keywords prove successful.

So right now your keywords are pasted into Column B & you have the length of the keywords in Column C.

We need to change this a bit so that we can format it so it easily import into Adwords Editor.

Here’s the proper format:

Sheet1 - Keywords
Column A Column B Column C Column D
Campaign Name Ad Group Name Keyword Match Type

You want to select Column B and paste it to Column C. Then in Column A, put in the name of your niche, like “Ringtones” – this will be your campaign name.

In Column D put your match type. I like to start with “Exact” because it’s super-targeted. If you use “Broad” you might lose money if your keyword list isn’t 100% targeted.

I suggest you start with using “Exact” in Column D, see how many clicks you get after a day or two, and then add “Phrase”, then finally add “Exact”. This way you are creating a hyper-specific campaign to start with, making sure it’s profitable, and then expanding out.

Make sure you “fill down” the Exact Match by double clicking on the bottom right of the cell.

Now you should be done with the Sheet1. You can rename this to your “Keywords” sheet by right clicking the sheet name at the bottom.

The next sheet is “Sheet2” – Rename this to your “Ad Group” sheet.

The header row for the Ad Group sheet is:

Sheet2 - Ad Groups
Column A Column B Column C
Campaign Name Ad Group Name Bid Price

So the easy way to do this is copy Column A & B from your Keywords sheet and paste it into Column A & B of your Ad Group Sheet. Then just set the bid price at 0.35 cents, which is the break-even bid price for a product that pays $35 assuming a 1% conversion.

You are now finished with your Ad Group sheet. That was easy.

Your third sheet is the “Ads” sheet. The header row is:

Sheet3 - Ads
Column A Column B Column C Column D Column E Column F Column G
Campaign Name Ad Group Name Title Description 1 Description 2 Display URL Destination URL

Again, you can copy Column A & B from your Ads sheet and paste it into Column A & B of your Ads sheet.

Column C is your Title. We are going to use the actual keyword as the Title of your ads. It will be really targeted since we have only 1 keyword in each Ad Group. And since we are using Exact match, when they type in the keyword, our Title will be in bold since it matches exactly.

So in cell C2, just add the formula “=Proper(B2)” – This will capitalize the first letter in each word of our ad group. Go ahead and fill down. You should now have all your Titles.

Description1 & Description2 needs to be 35 characters or less. I like to go to Google and look at my competitors ads that are in the top position and then use a variation of them when I first start my campaign. Usually your competitors spend a lot of money to split test their ads, so we are going to start with ad we know is most likely converting.

Once you fill in Description 1 & Description 2, fill down.

DisplayURL is your domain name either in the format of domain.com or www.domain.com (your choice).

Destination URL is the actual URL you want them to wind up on your website. Please note this needs to be the same domain as your Display URL, although it could be any page on your site. Fill this down as well.

So now you are done with your Keyword, Ad Group & Ads sheet!

That wasn’t so hard, was it?

Now you need to import into Adwords Editor…

"Importing Your Excel File Into Adwords Editor"

Adwords Editor is a tool developed by Google to allow us to quickly upload campaigns into our Google Adwords account.

You can download Adwords Editor from: http://www.google.com/intl/en/adwordseditor/

I suggest becoming familiar with Adwords Editor, because if you really want to succeed, you need to be able to quickly modify your campaigns.

All you are doing is taking what we just created in Excel and importing into Adwords Editor.

1) Go to your Keywords sheet and copy everything (except the header row). And then go into Adwords Editor. Click Data->Keywords->Add/Update Multiple Keywords. Make sure it’s selected where it says “My Keyword information below contains…”

Hit CTRL+V to paste into the box. Then click Next. You should now have 1 Campaign created with all your Keywords.

2) Go to your Ad Group sheet and copy everything (except the header row). And then go into Adwords Editor. Click Data->Ad Groups->Add/Update Multiple Ad Groups. Make sure it’s selected where it says “My Keyword information below contains…”

Hit CTRL+V to paste into the box. Then click Next. You should now have 1 Campaign created with all your Ad Group bids. 3) Go to your Ads sheet and copy everything (except the header row). And then go into Adwords Editor. Click Data->Text Ads->Add/Update Multiple Ads. Make sure it’s selected where it says “My Keyword information below contains…”

Hit CTRL+V to paste into the box. Then click Next. You should now have 1 Campaign created with all your Ads.

Finally, go to the “Campaign” tab in Adwords Editor. Here you can modify your campaign settings. Make sure the Search Network is selected as “Google and Search Network” and the Content Network says “None”

In this tutorial, I’m only showing you how to create a Search network campaign—NOT a Content network campaign. They are different because Content is targeting websites all across the internet and you need less specific ad headlines and 20-50 keywords in each ad group.

Put the budget as “20”, “50”, or whatever you are comfortable with spending per day. Change the location targeting to USA or wherever you want your ad to appear.

Review your keywords, ad groups, and ads to make sure everything looks right and you didn’t goof up somewhere.

Then at the top click “Post Changes” (it might say “Post Selected Campaign”). Then it will take a minute or a few minutes to load, and then click Post.

You are done! You now just created a highly targeted campaign using KeywordSpy, with 1 keyword in each Ad Group and the Title of each ad the same as the keyword.

Once you get the hang of this whole process, you can literally go from downloading the keywords in KeywordSpy to having a fully created campaign in around 10-20 minutes (if you are good).
